Alterkaker Hot 3

October 13, 2014

So you thought Smiley Miley was only good for a twerk or two? Think again: This cover of Dylan’s song “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go” kicks country ass. It comes from a 76-song CD put out in 2012 by Amnesty International called “Chimes Of Freedom: The Songs Of Bob Dylan” (50-year anniversary for Bob and Amesty). The CD boasts seventy-five different singers (plus Dylan doing the title track), each putting their own spin on the raspy-voiced veteran's songs (the full 4-CD digital download is $19.99, half of which goes to Amnesty International). Besides Miley, this week’s Alter Kaker Hot 3 also features two other performances from that recording: Canadian jazz pianist and singer Diana Krall, aka Mrs. Elvis Costello, singing “Simple Twist Of Fate,” and Adele doing a live version of Dylan’s beautiful ballad “Make You Feel My Love.”

A weekly selection of songs that only alter kakers ("old shitters") will remember -- except the tunes are obscure enough that they might not even recall.

This week: White guys sing the blues: David Bromberg's Lonesome Dave's Lovesick Blues (from the album "David Bromberg"); Hot Tuna's Candy Man (from "First Pull Up, Then Pull Down"); John Mayall's Room To Move (from "The Turning Point").
