The latest restaurant arrival in Brickell Village is CRATE Plant-based Kitchen, Bar and Lounge. The founder is Anselmo Di Virgilio Hernandez, a well-known furniture designer for major hotel groups, but more familiar locally as the co-owner of the popular Barú Latin Bar. CRATE’s concept is twofold:

1. A vegan/vegetarian menu of popular comfort foods such as burgers, burritos and Buffalo wings – with Asian and Indonesian-inspired accents (all dishes can be made vegan upon request).
2. An after-hours lounge that starts up when the kitchen closes at 11 pm.

Anselmo spent two years traveling the globe in search of a world class vegetarian chef who could develop an eclectic menu that would appeal to vegans like himself. While in Ubud, Bali, a mutual friend introduced Anselmo to Christopher Baugh, a young Californian chef with a casual vegetarian restaurant called “Sage” that he still has today. Now they are partners in this Miami venture, with Baugh serving as Executive Chef.

Starters include Buffalo “Wings” with a side of Ranch dressing ($9.50); Summer Rolls with fresh herbs, vegetables, roasted peanuts and dipping sauce ($9.50); and Holy Guacamole with house made chips and pico de gallo ($11.50). Salads include Killer Kale with organic greens, creamy Tahini dressing, avocado, cherry tomatoes, Kalamata olive, sprouts and hemp hearts ($11).

Burgers, made with a Mung Bean, organic brown rice and a roasted vegetable base, are served with organic fries and vegan cheese on request. They include the Classic Cheese Burger ($10); Mushroom Swiss Burger ($12); Hula Burger with grilled pineapple, caramelized onions and Teriyaki sauce ($10); and a Double Bacon Cheeseburger with mayo, double stacked “bacon,” cheese, lettuce and tomato ($16.50).

Tacos and Burritos are served with refried or black beans, Spanish rice, pico de gallo, chopped lettuce and cheese.  A choice of fillings include Jackfruit Asada ($13); Crispy “Tricken’ Chicken” ($11); fried avocado ($12); and buffalo “wings” ($12).

Desserts are prepared daily by pastry chef Sarah Baugh, and include Caramel Apple Cake ($6); Raspberry Vanilla Cake ($6); and Coconut Cake ($6). CRATE also offers a number of organic cold pressed signature juices in two different sizes ($8 or $11), as well as a wide array of organic smoothies. And this being a bar, there are creative cocktails and frozen drinks as well.

CRATE seats 152, and with its outdoor patio spans over 3,700 square feet. Designed by Hernandez, the main room features an ornamental lighting fixture illuminated by miniature bottles of olive oil. Once it transforms into an after-hours lounge, CRATE emulates a retro-style living room with an oversized LED screen that pulsates to the progressive music.

Anselmo describes the restaurant: “The concept upon which CRATE is based reflects the resolution that meets the needs of vegetarians and vegans who, like myself, have been looking for a casual dining option for quite some time.” He further describes CRATE as “simple and affordable.”
