Ron Barceló and Miami-based artist Ruben Ubiera, both proud Dominicans, recently launched the new Ubiera-designed Limited Edition Barceló Añejo Rum. The launch pad was the Wynwood Diner, decked out with the sleek golden bottles, Ghurka cigars, lantern-lights and copper punch bowls filled with Barceló’s summer cocktails: Just the Two of Us, a sprightly mango-based drink, and Pretty Girl, a pineapple take on the mojito. DJ Gabby Mejia kept the room lively.

I sampled some Barceló Añejo straight up: It’s a smooth amber Dominican rum with vanilla, toffee and caramel notes and a nice spiciness to it. Ubeira declared his bottle design: “Bold, fierce, in your face and very proud, just like my people. I moved to the U.S. to make a career out of art and my project with Ron Barceló marks a full circle.”

Wynwood Diner is always a comfortable place to hang, and its classic cheeseburgers and El Cubano sandwiches paired with the cocktails in an apt Wynwood way, as did platters of fried green tomatoes.

Less than 1,000 cases of Ruben Ubiera Limited Edition Barcelo Añejo 750ml bottle is available in the east coast markets of Florida, New Jersey and New York. Local retailers are Jensen Liquors and Pantry Liquors in Miami; Suarez Liquors in Hialeah; and Clark Liquor 3 in Doral. You can enjoy Barcelo Rum and cheeseburgers at the Wynwood Diner anytime.
